Musculoskeletal Health and rehabilitation.
A work description for using orthobiologics involves a medical professional collecting a patient's own healing cells (like platelets from blood or stem cells from bone marrow/fat), processing them to concentrate growth factors, and then injecting this biologic substance into injured joints, tendons, ligaments, or cartilage to reduce inflammation, accelerate natural repair, and potentially delay surgery, requiring patient assessment, sample collection, bioprocessing, image-guided injection, and post-treatment rehabilitation.
Key Responsibilities & Procedures
Patient Consultation & Assessment: Evaluate patients for suitability, diagnosing musculoskeletal issues (osteoarthritis, tendon/ligament tears, cartilage damage) not responding to traditional treatments.
Sample Collection (Harvesting):
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP): Draw blood, then use a centrifuge to concentrate platelets.
Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate (BMAC): Extract bone marrow from the pelvis via needle, process to concentrate cells.
Adipose-Derived: Harvest fat tissue (less common).
Sample Processing: Use centrifuges or filtration systems to create a high concentration of healing cells and growth factors (e.g., PRP, BMAC).
Image-Guided Injection:
Numb the injection site with local anesthetic.
Injection of patients own cells into the area of injury.
Treatment & Follow-Up: Administer the biologic substance, provide post-procedure care instructions, and coordinate with physical therapists for rehabilitation to maximize healing.
